Types of Engine Controls
Each system will provide excellent control if properly selected and installed.
In some instances a combination of controls can be utilized where one type of control is not practical to install throughout the vessel.
All mechanical components used in Kobelt controls are manufactured from die cast silicon bronze and stainless steel hardware providing ease of operation and exceptional longevity in even the most severe conditions.
There are three major types of engine control
systems for boats:
- Mechanical connection: Push-Pull or Wire-Over-Pulley
- Pneumatic (compressed air)
- Electronic
Each type has it's advantages. Here, you will find out which one is right for you! The quick
summary is:
Mechanical Controls
Push-Pull (Mechanical Controls)
These systems are the most economical and feature:
- The broadest selection of heads, handles and connection gear.
- Easy installation (Do it yourselfers).
- Ideal for one or two stations (Kobelt has an unsurpassed, unique 2 station control system using pull/pull cables. See 2090 series Push & Pull section.)
- Not recommended for runs over 40 feet or where total cable bends will exceed 360 degrees.

Wire over Pulley (Mechanical Controls)
These systems provide the best mechanical control and feature:
- Accommodation for up to 6 control stations.
- Wire runs up to 200 feet.
- Positive response.
- Elimination of backlash.
Pneumatic
These systems utilize compressed air through a series of copper tubing, valves and possibly timing panels to transmit signals.
Best suited for larger boats requiring complex propulsion control functions. They feature:
- Unlimited number of control stations.
- Can automate the whole propulsion package.
- Very dependable and accurate.
- Effortless control.
- Expensive to install, but require minimal maintenance.

Electronic
These systems transmit an electronic signal to either an actuator or direct to Electronic Engine and gearbox components to provide control of engine throttle and clutch.
They can be used for any size vessel and feature:
- Easy installation (electronic cable only, except where actuator must be mounted in engine room).
- Up to 8 stations (depending on system).
- Fingertip control of option selections.
- Unlimited combinations and options.
- Walk-about control available.
- Good value.
Manual back-up is available for all Kobelt electronic controls (e.g. if the electricity fails).
